How to Descale a Delonghi Nespresso Lattissima Coffee Machine

Preparing the Machine

Before descaling your Delonghi Nespresso Lattissima coffee machine, there are a few steps you need to take to prepare the machine. First, turn on the machine and remove any pods that may be in the chamber on the top. Then, empty the waste collection tray to dispose of any excess liquid or water, as well as any pods. Next, empty the water filling tank of any old water and fill it with approximately 500ml of cold water. Finally, prepare the descaling solution by adding a sachet of descaling solution into the water tank and make sure the lid is closed securely.

Descaling Process

The descaling process is the main step in removing limescale residue from your coffee machine. To begin, open the panel under where the milk container sits and remove the hot water nozzle. Then, open the flap where the milk container normally attaches and securely attach the hot water nozzle. The cappuccino button, located on the bottom right-hand side of the machine, will start flashing orange, indicating that the machine is now in descaling mode.

Next, place a suitable sized container, such as a bowl, under the coffee outlet and hot water nozzle to catch the descaling solution. Press the cappuccino button to start the descaling process. The machine will begin to flush the descaling solution through both the coffee outlet and hot water nozzle. The descaling process typically takes around 10 minutes. During this time, the cappuccino button will flash alternatively between the cappuccino button and the latte macchiato button at the top right of the machine. Once only the bottom cappuccino button is flashing orange, the descaling process is almost complete.

Rinsing Process

After completing the descaling process, it is important to thoroughly rinse the machine to remove any remaining descaling solution. Start by emptying the descaling solution from the container or bowl. Then, remove the water tank and rinse it thoroughly, ensuring no descaling solution is left inside. Refill the water tank with fresh cold water to the maximum level and carefully place it back onto the machine.

Next, place the container back under the coffee outlet and hot water nozzle to catch any fluids from the rinsing process. Press the flashing orange cappuccino button to start the rinsing process. Again, the cappuccino light will change to blue and will flash alternatively between the cappuccino button and the latte macchiato button. Once the machine has finished rinsing, it will stop and turn off.

Exiting Descaling Mode

To exit descaling mode, you need to empty and clean the drip tray. Ensure there are no excess fluids remaining and thoroughly rinse the drip tray. Once rinsed, put the drip tray back into the machine. Finally, wipe over the machine with a damp cloth to remove any excess liquids that may have escaped during the descaling process.

Repeat Descale Process if Necessary

Sometimes, it may be necessary to repeat the descaling process if the cappuccino light continues to show a steady orange light after turning the machine back on. If you find that the cappuccino light remains steady orange, turn off and on the machine again to restart the process. Check if the cappuccino light is still steady orange, and if it is, repeat the descaling process.
