The Ultimate Descale Instructional Guide for Nespresso Machines (All Model Instructions)
Descaling your Nespresso machine removes the minerals that cause limescale to build up inside your machine. The water used to brew your espresso or coffee pods includes minerals that cause limescale to build up. If this is not remedied, it is possible that the temperature of your coffee and its flavor, in addition to the machine’s water flow, will be negatively affected. Since Nespresso machines are not inexpensive, it is essential to learn how to give them a proper deep clean to make them last as long as possible.

Continue reading if you want to learn more about how to descale Nespresso machines. Instructions for descaling every Nespresso model, including the Vertuo and the Original, have been documented by me and can be found here. To get started with the process, you will need a descaling solution package similar to one that we will go over below.

What Should You Do If the Nespresso Descaling Warning Light Remains Illuminated?
How Frequently Should Nespresso Machines Be Descaled?
Nespresso suggests that in addition to daily cleaning, you descale your machine once every three months or after using 300 capsules, whichever happens first. If the water from your tap is considered “hard water,” meaning it has a greater concentration of minerals, then you should clean your appliance more frequently. You can purchase an inexpensive water testing tool if you are uncertain about the amount of minerals in your water supply.

The more expensive Nespresso Original versions with an integrated display will have a notification informing you when it is necessary to descale your machine. The Nespresso Vertuoline comes equipped with an indicator that will indicate when it is necessary to descale the machine. The VertuoPlus will have an illumination that is half red and half green, although some individuals may perceive the green to have a yellowish tint. A flashing orange light will be displayed on the Vertuo Next and the Vertuo and Evoluo. This light may appear yellow to some individuals. After this warning indicator has been illuminated, you can still make a few more uses of your device; however, it is in your best interest to descale as soon as possible.

Descaling light for the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is half red and half green.
After this warning indicator has been illuminated, you can still make a few more uses of your device; however, it is in your best interest to descale as soon as possible. The entire procedure can be completed in fifteen to twenty minutes. Because it is impossible to halt, you must wait to begin until you have all of the necessary materials and sufficient time to complete it before you do so.

Why Using Vinegar to Descale Your Nespresso Machine Is A Terrible Concept
Vinegar should NOT be used to descale your Nespresso machine, per the manufacturer’s instructions. Acetic acid makes up between 5 and 8% of the volume of white vinegar. This acid can corrode metal and make your equipment leak, so it should be avoided. As a consequence of this, cleaning your Nespresso with vinegar may cause the guarantee on your machine to become void.

To properly maintain your Nespresso machine, rather than using vinegar, you should purchase one of these descaling packages and follow its instructions. These packages contain varieties of cleaning acids that are less hazardous while still providing satisfactory results.

Nespresso Expert
Carefully follow the instructions that are listed below. It does not matter if you have a Nespresso Expert or an Expert&Milk machine; the descale procedures are the same for both.

Prep
Remove any remaining capsules from the used receptacle and empty the drip tray. Check to see that the computer does not contain any pods.
Drain the water from the reservoir. Place two of the descaling solution sachets in the reservoir that came with your Nespresso machine. The container should then be refilled with clean water up to the MAX line. Above this line, you should not write anything!
Put a receptacle with at least 1.2 liters capacity under the coffee maker and the hot water faucet.
Stop the machine and make sure the button is in. To power down the device, rotate the temperature gauge counterclockwise until it reads 0 degrees Celsius. After that, there will be a blinking light for five seconds, and then the device will power down.

Descale Cycle

While counting to six, you’ll need to keep the brew handle pressed down. Both dials will begin flashing when you have successfully navigated to the menu for the special capabilities.
After setting the recipe, dial the ristretto icon, and click the brew button once to begin preparing the ristretto.
After turning the temperature dial high, click the brew button once to begin brewing. The symbol representing the ristretto will begin to flash. This verifies that the descale option is currently active on your Nespresso Expert. Throughout the entirety of the procedure, it will continue to blink. However, the maintenance indicator will remain lit most of the time. Keep a watch on the maintenance light at all times because it will flash at specific points in the process to indicate when you need to take action.
To begin the descaling process, press the boil button a further one more time.
After a few minutes, the descaling process will momentarily pause, and a blinking light will indicate that Maintenance is required. After the receptacle and the drip tray have been cleaned of their contents, put them both back into the machine.

Again, press the option labeled “brew.” The descaling process will start again and continue uninterrupted until the water reservoir is devoid of all water, at which point it will end.
Rinse
Clear out the receptacle completely. To eliminate any residue, rinse the empty water tank, the drip tray, and the cup support.
Freshwater, measuring 1.2 liters (41 ounces), should be poured into the water container. Take care not to fill the reservoir less than halfway! Should you choose to do so, the descale maintenance light will continue to flash after the procedure.
After emptying the 1.2-liter container, replace it in its original position, and press the brew button once to begin the rinse procedure.
When the machine detects that the water reservoir is dry and the rinsing process is complete, it will turn itself off.

What Should You Do If the Nespresso Descaling Warning Light Remains Illuminated?
You may need to exit descaling mode explicitly, but that will depend on the specific Nespresso model you own. If you fail, the descaling warning may continue to sound. You will, at some point, be prevented from preparing coffee. Please refer to the article I’ve linked here for specific instructions on finishing descaling.

Creatista Uno Essenza Plus
Nespresso Expert Vertuo Plus Vertuo Evoluo Essenza Mini CitiZ Pixie Inissia Nespresso U
One more typical cause for the descale warning light to remain lit is that a stage was either not finished or not finished promptly. For instance, Vertuo Plus stipulates that you must finish each stage within two minutes of the conclusion of the previous one. In addition, the rinse procedure on many models requires waiting until the empty water tank before continuing. In the event that it does not empty completely, the indicator will remain on. In this scenario, you can restart the descaling process from the beginning, but this time using only water and no solution at all.

If you have tried everything possible and cannot exit the descaling option, you may need to reset your Nespresso.
